It is with great sadness that Tennis Canada mourns the loss of Jean Elizabeth MacPherson, an avid tennis competitor, fan, and a shining beacon in the Canadian tennis community. Last week, Jean lost her battle with lung cancer at 82 years old.
Throughtout her life, Jean was active in sports and an all-around athlete, but her true love was tennis. As a child, she grew up a block from the tennis courts of Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. Jean competed at the junior level and was a member of Team Nova Scotia, representing her province at national championships from age 12 to 18.
However, Jean’s love of the game didn’t stop there. She was also a passionate tennis fan; enjoying the sport at the highest level. She attended Wimbledon, the French Open, and the US Open on many occasions.
It was in recent years that Jean channeled her love for the game into helping others and her vision of creating a world-class tennis training facility in Nova Scotia. It was Jean’s dream that all Nova Scotians be provided access and opportunities to learn and play the game that gave her so much joy.
Jean’s passion and generous support has been a driving force that will ensure that the Atlantic Tennis Centre will begin construction in 2018/2019. Donations may be made to Tennis Canada for the development of the Atlantic Tennis Centre in Halifax, by contacting Tulla Bateman at Tennis Canada: email@example.com or 416-650-7918.
