The U14 Indoor Junior Nationals took place on Saturday at the UBC Tennis Centre in Vancouver, British Colombia.

First up was the girls’ final which opposed two Alberta natives, Mia Kupres, the fifth seed, and Martyna Ostrzygalo, the 13th seed. These players had an exceptional tournament, with notable performances coming in their semi-final matches where Kupres defeated the third seed and Ostrzygalo defeated the top seed in straight sets. In Saturday’s final, it was Kupres who captured the title with a dominant performance, winning 6-3, 6-0. She was coming into the tournament having finished third in the U16 Indoor Junior Nationals in March. Victoria Mboko of Ontario defeated the top seed Danielle Tuhten of British Colombia 6-1, 6-3 to take third place.

On the boys’ side, the final featured the tournament’s top seeds, with Jade Weekes of Quebec (no. 1) taking on Stefan Simeunovic of Ontario (no. 2). Neither player had dropped a set in their quarter-final and semi-final matches. After dropping the first set on Saturday, Weekes was able to elevate his game and take the second set to force a decider. The Quebec native continued his momentum in the third, ultimately defeating Simeunovic 5-7, 6-1, 6-0 to take home the title, after finishing runner-up last year. Weekes was crowned U12 Indoor and Outdoor Junior National champion in 2016. British Colombia native Aaron Pilbart finished in third place with his 6-3, 6-2 victory over Christophe Clément of Quebec.

Weekes completed the title sweep by also winning the boys’ final playing alongside Clément. The top doubles seeds defeated the Ontario duo of Simeunovic and Nemanja Stefanovic by a score of 6-3, 6-4. It was Tuhten and Dharani Niroshan (ON) who took home the girls’ doubles title with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Sarah Liu (ON) and Annabelle Xu (QC).
