Fed Cup by BNP Paribas weekend in Montreal promises to be an exciting event in Canadian tennis. Prior to the start of the matches on April 21 and 22, fans can now get to know the Ukrainian team.

Ukraine has been taking part in Fed Cup events for the past 26 years. Prior to 1993, Ukrainian players represented the Soviet Union.

With four players currently ranked in the WTA Top 100, including one player in the Top 5—Elina Svitolina—Ukraine has been making a name for itself at the international level. The team reached the World Group for the first time in 2010, but ultimately lost in the first round to Italy. The nation returned to the top division in 2012, falling once again in a close battle with Italy.

April 22-23, 2017 – World Group play-off

Ukraine falls to experienced German team

After spending three years playing in the Zonal Group, Ukraine finally managed to move back into World Group II in 2017. In their first round encounter with Australia, Elina Svitolina’s return to the team proved very valuable as she won both her singles matches in the nation’s 3-2 victory. Ukraine, however, went on to lose their World Group play-off by a score of 3-2 against Germany in April, with the best players from the two nations taking part in the competition. Although both Angelique Kerber and Elina Svitolina were in action, it was Julia Goerges who put on an inspired performance to help her team secure the win over Ukraine.

February 10-11, 2018 – World Group II first round tie

Ukraine upset by Australia

In their search to rejoin the elite World Group, Ukraine faced Australia for the second time in as many years. Led by 15-year-old Marta Kostyuk, the Ukrainian team was unable to come out on top this time around, falling 3-2 to their opponents.

April 21-22, 2018 – World Group II play-off

Ukraine will face Canada

Both teams will be looking to maintain their World Group II status. The Ukrainian players will hope to extract revenge on Canada, given that their defeat in their only previous meeting at this stage of the competition in 2013 saw Ukraine relegated to the Zonal Group.
