Pitting Canada’s top university teams against each other, the Canadian University Tennis Championships got rolling on Friday at IGA Stadium in Montréal.

The University of Western Ontario, Dalhousie University, the University of Alberta and Université de Montréal battled it out in the men’s event, while McGill University, Western University, Dalhousie University and the University of Alberta went head-to-head in the women’s tournament.

Women’s final four on Friday

On Friday, the women’s semifinals got off to an exciting start.

The University of Alberta was strong out of the gate, as the Golden Pandas dominated McGill University with five wins, three in doubles and two in singles.

The Albertans relied on Alexandra Jewitt, Jessica Kreutz and Sandra Taskovic, who carried their team to Sunday’s final. 

Mustangs race into the finals

The Western University Mustangs arrived in Montréal determined, and the women’ s squad dropped only one of their semifinal matches against Dalhousie University. Jenny Klenner helped the Tigers avoid a shutout with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Lauryn Son.

Carabins on home turf

Everyone was in high spirits around Centre Court at IGA Stadium this morning as the Université de Montréal Carabins challenged Western’s Mustangs.

Liam Rompré outmaneuvered Shane Bulitka in three sets (2-6, 6-2, 6-0) to secure a spot in the men’s final.

In the last round, the Carabins will take on the University of Alberta, which dismantled Dalhousie.

Championship Sunday

The 2023 Canadian University Tennis Championships will crown its winners on Sunday, the same day as the National Bank Open presented by Rogers.

The University of Alberta will collide with Western University in the women’s event and could leave IGA Stadium with the men’s title, too, as the Golden Bears clash with the UdeM Carabins.

In the other matches slated for Sunday, McGill is up against Dalhousie in the women’s event and Western will tackle Dalhousie in the men’s tournament.
