Leylah Annie Fernandez a aisément franchi le premier tour des Internationaux des États-Unis, dimanche, grâce à une victoire de 6-3 et 6-2 face à Shuai Zhang.
La 31e tête de série atteint ainsi le deuxième tour d’un tournoi du Grand Chelem pour la première fois cette année. Sa prochaine adversaire sera la gagnante du match opposant Panna Udvardy et Mananchaya Sawangkaew.
« Je suis très contente. C’est une joueuse coriace et je savais que je devais être concentrée sur la tâche dès les premiers instants », a mentionné la Canadienne après sa victoire.
Aucune balle de bris n’a été enregistrée au cours des sept premiers jeux de la manche initiale.
Fernandez a réussi à se créer trois occasions de bris au huitième jeu, et est parvenue à ravir le service de Zhang dès la deuxième tentative. Elle a ensuite facilement remporté ses offrandes pour empocher la manche au cours de laquelle elle a gagné 88 pour cent de ses premiers services.
La Lavalloise a obtenu un autre bris au premier jeu du deuxième acte. Fernandez a rencontré ses premières difficultés au deuxième jeu, mais elle a réussi à repousser une tentative de Zhang.

Fernandez would find herself in trouble again on her next service game as Zhang forced triple break point with a chance to put the set back on serve. The Canadian would again show great resolve, fighting off a total of five break points in the game and punctuated a massive hold with a fantastic passing shot that sent the crowd in Flushing Meadows to their feet.
The crowd stayed behind the 2021 US Open finalist through the rest of the match as Fernandez would go on to break Zhang one more time en route to the victory.
“They do treat me like family. I have a deep connection with New York, and hopefully I get to do well in front of this crowd, and I hope to see you at my next matches,” said Fernandez. “With the crowd helping me, it was so much fun, and I enjoy every moment here.”
The Canadian is looking to string together a strong performance in Flushing Meadows and moved past the third round for the first time since reaching the final five years ago.
