With the first Grand Slam of the year upon us in Melbourne, Ben Lewis and Mike McIntyre delve deep into the draw of the Aussie Open this week on Episode 2 of Match Point Canada. Joining them is respected tennis writer and broadcaster Jon Wertheim who has worked at Sports Illustrated and Tennis Channel, where you’ve read and heard his expert analysis.

On the podcast this week the guys give their takes on favourites and darkhorses. Consensus picks had Novak Djokovic on the men’s side as he goes for an incredible 10th Australian Open title while on the women’s side it’s hard to argue with World No. 1 Iga Swiatek to capture her first Slam down under.

In terms of how the Canadians fared in the draw, both Match Point Canada hosts, along with Wertheim, believe that Bianca Andreescu could make some noise. Their guest had the following to say about her lurking as an unseeded player:

“She’s another one of those players who we all know is much better than her ranking suggests. She’s not even seeded and there’s no way there are 32 better players in the world than she is.”

Aside from all things Aussie Open, there was also plenty of talk about the new Netflix tennis series: Break Point. Have a listen to see what the reaction was to the first few episodes and how the show can positively impact the sport of tennis overall.

We discuss that and much more on the newest episode of Match Point Canada, available on Megaphone, Apple Podcasts, or Spotify below. We hope you enjoy!
