The Canadian singles contingent at the U.S. Open went undefeated on Monday in Flushing Meadows, New York with a quartet of players advancing to the second round of the final Grand Slam event of the tennis season.

Leylah Annie Fernandez, last year’s U.S. Open finalist, continued her love affair with the tournament by posting a convincing 6-3, 6-4 win over Oceane Dodin of France in the nightcap at Louis Armstrong Stadium to join Bianca Andreescu, Félix Auger-Aliassime, and Rebecca Marino in the next round.

The 19-year-old, who is seeded no. 14 in the women’s draw, needed two service breaks in each set to secure a straight sets victory in just over an hour. She played a clean match, hitting 26 winners, including 10 aces, compared to just nine unforced errors.

On Wednesday, she’ll face world no. 35 Luidmila Samsonova who just captured the title at the WTA event in Cleveland over the weekend.

Denis Shapovalov, seeded no. 19 in the men’s draw, will look to join his compatriots in round two on Tuesday afternoon when he takes on Marc-Andrea Huesler of Switzerland. You can watch the match on TSN and RDS.
