The Canadian Safe Sport Program (CSSP), administered by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES), aims to ensure that all individuals involved in national-level, federally funded sport organizations in Canada can train and compete in environments that are safe, respectful, and supportive. Effective April 1, 2025, the CCES is responsible for independently enforcing the Universal Code of Conduct to Prevent and Address Maltreatment in Sport (UCCMS) through the CSSP.
Key Features of the Canadian Safe Sport Program
- Scope and Application: The CSSP applies to participants of all federally funded national-level sport organizations, including athletes, coaches, support personnel, and officials. It outlines clear procedures for reporting and addressing prohibited behaviors as defined by the UCCMS, such as psychological, physical, and sexual maltreatment, neglect, discrimination, grooming, and retaliation
- Reporting Mechanism: Individuals can report instances of prohibited behavior directly to the CCES through an online form or by calling a toll-free number. The CCES ensures that reports are handled in a timely, reliable, and procedurally fair manner, with defined timelines at each stage of the process
- Support Services: The CSSP offers support services to connect participants with necessary help throughout the reporting and resolution process. This includes access to mental health resources and guidance from case managers
- Education Requirements: All individuals subject to the CSSP Rules are required to complete an online education course, "Safe Sport 2025," which includes information on recognizing and reporting prohibited behaviors, understanding the CSSP procedures, and acknowledging their rights and responsibilities
- Public Registry: The CSSP maintains a public registry that lists individuals who have been sanctioned or are under provisional measures, promoting transparency and accountability within the sport community .cces.ca
