Whether you’re a beginner or pro, no player should overlook the importance of warming up prior to a session or match. Tennis coach Isabella Baston explained all the reasons why.

Cardio

Firstly, it increases heart rate, body temperature, and optimizes range of motion that prepares the body to move efficiently and powerfully. The gradual rise in circulation and muscle temperature can be achieved through cardio – starting off with some light jogging and arm circles, then moving onto lateral movements like shuffles or crossovers, before ending off with some short sprints.

Dynamic Movement

Warm-ups are also vital for preventing injuries while simultaneously improving movement effectiveness. Dynamic stretching ensures that the key areas that will be utilized during play are engaged, so the body is at its fullest potential once the first rally begins.

Coordination

On top of its physiological benefits, warming up can significantly enhance one’s psychological performance and state. For example, just add a throw-and-catch element to the previously mentioned lateral movements to improve coordination.

Consistency / Routine

Just adding a consistent warm-up routine helps build healthy habits that promote discipline and allow a player to get into “the zone.” They essentially create a signal to the mind and body that “it’s time to play,” getting the individual focused and ready to compete.

Plus, if the mind and body are at their best before the first ball is even hit, it will only boost on-court performance and make for a confident player.
