INDIAN WELLS

Tennis Canada is holding its annual Fan Gala, and you have until December 18 to vote for your favourite moments in Canadian tennis from the past season. What was the most touching event? Who went head-to-head in the match of the year? It’s all up to YOU!

Here are the nominees for Most Touching Moment of the Year.

1- Leylah Annie Fernandez and her dad at Roland-Garros

In June, Leylah Annie Fernandez became the first Canadian to win France’s junior Grand Slam title when she was crowned champion at Roland-Garros in front of hundreds of spectators and her biggest fan: her father and coach!

It can be challenging to balance the father/daughter-coach/player relationship, but Leylah Annie has always said that teaming up with her dad is worth it.

2- Bianca Andreescu consoles Serena Williams in Toronto

It was the historic clash we were all looking forward to. At Rogers Cup in Toronto, fan-favourite Bianca Andreescu was set to collide with the mighty Serena Williams.

You’ve probably already heard the story but it still bears repeating. Down 1-3 in the opening set, the tennis icon was forced to retire due to injury.

Before celebrating her new WTA title, Bianca walked over to console her rival in tears and express all her admiration.

We love Bianca’s big heart!

3- Denis Shapovalov dedicates his win to Bruno Agostinelli

After defeating Steve Johnson in Indian Wells this part March, Denis Shapovalov pointed to the sky and dedicated his win to Bruno Agostinelli, a national coach at Tennis Canada with whom he’d trained.

At the post-match press conference, Denis explained that it had been the third anniversary of Bruno’s death in a motorcycle accident: “I just wish he was around to see how far I’ve come and I hope he would have been proud of me.”

We KNOW he would be!

So, which moment from the past season gave you all the feels?

Vote now and come right back here for a rundown of the next category of Tennis Canada’s 2019 Fan Gala!
