IGA Stadium Modernization Initiative

Introduction

An iconic tennis venue in Montreal and across Canada, IGA Stadium is preparing to enter a new era.

Tennis Canada is taking a major step forward in its modernization efforts by unveiling its preferred scenario for the future of the site: the construction of a new three-season stadium and a complete redevelopment of the grounds, designed to integrate harmoniously with Jarry Park and its surrounding environment.

This direction reflects a clear commitment to preserving Montreal’s place among the world’s premier international tennis destinations, while evolving the facilities to better meet the needs of the sport and the community.

Designed to host the National Bank Open and support the growth of tennis, the future stadium would provide a more accessible, versatile, and environmentally integrated venue for the benefit of all users.

The Initiative

Why Act Now?

IGA Stadium is approaching the end of its useful life and no longer meets the requirements of the professional tennis tours. At a time when major international tournaments have modernized their facilities, taking action is essential to ensure that Montreal remains home to a world-class event.

Beyond the tournament itself, the National Bank Open plays a vital role: it generates significant economic benefits that are reinvested in the development of tennis in Quebec and across Canada.

A Rigorous Analysis Process

To inform its decision-making, Tennis Canada conducted a feasibility study to evaluate a range of potential scenarios. This process identified the construction of a new stadium as the most sustainable, cost-effective, and long-term solution to meet the needs of the event, the sport, and the community.

Our Vision

The proposed project centres on a site redevelopment scenario including the construction of a new three-season stadium.

Key elements of the project would include:

  • The construction of a new centre court with greater seating capacity.
  • The addition of a retractable roof so the stadium can operate in all weather conditions during three seasons.
  • The addition of indoor and outdoor courts accessible to the community and upgrades to the current facilities.
  • A comprehensive site redesign that enhances the integration with Parc Jarry and improves accessibility for community members.

An On-Going Process

As part of the project’s next phase, Tennis Canada launched a request for proposals to develop an opportunity study that will further refine the analyses and confirm the parameters of the selected solution. Preliminary discussions are already underway with all levels of government and several partners to explore potential avenues for collaboration.

Tennis Canada is placing the community at the centre of its approach and remains committed to maintaining an open dialogue with local stakeholders. Consultations will be organized to ensure the project’s evolution reflects the expectations and needs of Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension residents and those who use Parc Jarry.

The National Bank Open: A Catalyst for Lasting Impact

The National Bank Open is a powerful engine of tennis development and physical activity in Montreal and across Quebec. Net proceeds from the tournament are reinvested by Tennis Canada to create more opportunities for people to play the sport and to support athletes on their journey to the highest levels of competition.

It is through the success of the tournament that Tennis Canada is able to support players such as Félix Auger-Aliassime, Victoria Mboko, and many others. The creation of the National Tennis Centre presented by Rogers, which opened at IGA Stadium in 2007, would also not have been possible without the tournament’s longstanding presence in Montreal.

Beyond its impact on sport, the National Bank Open—one of the most prestigious tennis events in the world—generates significant benefits for the community, the local economy, and the development of tennis across Canada.
