U12 begins March 23 in Calgary, U14 begins April 1 in Vancouver, U16 begins March 22 in Montreal, U18 begins March 30 in Toronto
The 2024 Indoor Fischer Juniors Nationals kick off this weekend with events taking place in Montreal, Quebec and Calgary, Alberta. The U16 tournament will commence at the Club de tennis Île des Soeurs from March 22-29 in Montreal while the U12 tournament is scheduled at the Osten & Victor Alberta Tennis Centre from March 23-30.
The U14 tournament will then take place in Vancouver, British Columbia from April 1-7 at the UBC Tennis Centre and the U18 tournament will be played in Toronto, Ontario from March 30-April 6 at Sobeys Stadium. A number of members from Tennis Canada’s coveted National Tennis Centre presented by Rogers as well as its U15 Canadian Prospect Team are set to take part in these tournaments across the country.
“There are so many talented players in the competitive pipeline throughout all of these age groups, and this is a prime opportunity for them to showcase themselves,” said Guillaume Marx, Tennis Canada’s Head of Performance. “As we’ve seen in many of the past champions, the Fischer Junior Nationals clearly play a pivotal role in helping develop our Canadian tennis prospects as well as providing lifetime memories to all participants.”
The indoor championships began in 1979 with the U18 age group, 26 years after the inaugural outdoor championships took place. Slowly but surely, this was expanded to include the U12, U14 and U16 age groups as well, ensuring that all junior age groups were competing on indoor courts under the national umbrella.
“The Fischer Indoor Junior Nationals are always such great tournaments to experience, as we really get to see the next generation of Canadian tennis players shine,” said Ryan Borczon, Director of Professional and National Events at Tennis Canada. “It’s a great opportunity for these young players to showcase their talents across the country and compete against the best of their age groups. Tennis Canada would like to thank all the hosts in Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia, and Alberta for their efforts in helping put these events together.”
In 2023, the boys champion for U12 was Deniz Karabulut and the girls champion was Milagros Pastuszka. The U14 boys champion was Andy Tchinda Kepche and the girls champion was Joyce Geng. The U16 boys champion was Adam Faragcao and the girls champion was Emma Dong. The U18 boys champion was Kuang Qing Xu and the girls champion was Nadia Lagaev.
Notable past champions at these events include Eugenie Bouchard, Denis Shapovalov, Milos Raonic, Gabriela Dabrowski, Vasek Pospisil, Leylah Annie Fernandez, Gabriel Diallo, and Rebecca Marino.
