Canada are the favourites in Group A at this week’s Billie Jean King Cup Play-offs as the highest-ranked team in the group, boasting the top singles player and top doubles player. But their road back to the 2026 qualifiers won’t be easy.

The hosts Mexico are sending an experienced squad including a couple of in-form veterans. Denmark will have youth to their advantage at the end of a long season.

Let’s meet Canada’s 2025 Billie Jean King Cup Play-offs opponents.

Denmark

  • Date: Saturday, November 15 (matches begin at 5 pm EST in Canada)
  • Head-to-Head: Canada leads 3-0
  • Last Meeting: 1991 World Group First Round (Nottingham, UK), Canada won 2-1

On paper, the Danes face the biggest uphill battle among the three teams. They are without their No. 1 singles player, world No. 12 Clara Tauson, who withdrew earlier this week, leaving Team Denmark without a Top 500 singles player. They are also the youngest team in the group with an average age of 20 years, three months. Their oldest player is 21 years old.

Johanne Christine Svendsen, ranked No. 554 in the world, projects to be the Danish No. 1. Svendsen did not play a match above the ITF W35 level in 2025, excluding April’s Billie Jean King Cup Qualifiers, although she did reach three ITF Tour finals, winning one title at the W15 event in Gdansk, Poland in June. Svendsen has met Canadian No. 1 Victoria Mboko once before, with the Canadian scoring the win in straight sets in the second round of the 2023 Tevlin Challenger.

The only other player on the Danish team ranked inside the Top 1000 in singles is world No. 652 Rebecca Munk Mortensen. She has had more success in 2025 in doubles, winning a pair of ITF W15 titles and is ranked 595th.

Rounding out Team Denmark are Emma Kamper, ranked 1174th in singles and 822nd in doubles with one ITF W15 title in 2025, and Laura Brunkel, world No. 1295 in singles.

Mexico

  • Date: Sunday, November 16 (matches begin at 5 pm EST in Canada)
  • Head-to-Head: Canada leads 7-1
  • Last Meeting: 2008 Americans Zone Group I (Medellin, Colombia), Canada won 3-0

Based on player rankings, Mexico poses the biggest threat to the Canadians in Group A. They also boast a Top 100 singles player in world No. 70 Renata Zarazua and a solid doubles star in Giuliana Olmos.

Zarazua in coming in hot, having just won the WTA 125 title in Austin, Texas, last week, beating none of than Canada’s Marina Stakusic in the final. However, assuming each team fields their best lineups by ranking, Zarazua will have to tussle with Canadian No. 1 Victoria Mboko this week rather than getting another crack at Stakusic. Mboko won the lone previous meeting with Zarazua back in 2023 in the ITF Saskatoon quarter-finals 6-1, 6-2.

Ana Sofia Sanchez, ranked No. 179, is expected to be the Mexican No. 2. The 31-year-old is a 16-time singles titlist on the ITF Tour, including two wins in 2025. Her biggest title came this year at the W75 event in Olomouc, Czechia, on clay.

Olmos provides strength in doubles for Mexico. While she is down to No. 46 in the doubles rankings, the 32-year-old is a former world No. 6 and has seven WTA Tour doubles titles in her career. She won a WTA 250 title earlier this year in Singapore and reached 500-level final on home soil in Guadalajara in September.

An interesting plotline to follow in the Canada-Mexico matchup will be in the doubles if/when Olmos clashes with Dabrowski. The two played together back in 2022-2023, reaching four finals together and claiming two titles, including the WTA 1000 crown in Madrid in 2022.

Victoria Rodriguez Arroyo (singles No. 363 and doubles No. 203) and Julia Garcia (singles No. 763) complete the Mexican lineup. Rodriguez Arroyo won an ITF doubles title earlier this year with Sanchez.
