Leylah Annie Fernandez's bid to pick up a second title during the 2026 Asian Swing was denied on Sunday by world No. 1 Elena Rybakina in the final of the Ningbo Open. The top seed defended her title by besting her Canadian challenger in straight sets.

The Lavalloise had battled into the final with three three-set wins in the early rounds but the world's best player proved too much on Sunday. Rybakina was unflappable in the title match, riding her mighty serve to a 6-2, 6-2 win.

Just by reaching the final, Fernandez had justified her decision not to defend her title at the 250 event in Osaka this week, as a runner-up showing in Ningbo earned the Canadian No. 1 more ranking points than a 250-level title.

Rybakina mostly controlled proceedings with her big-hitting game, striking 25 winners but committing the same number of errors. Fernandez was on the defensive for much of the match and only managed 10 winners to 24 unforced errors. The world No. 1 was also clutch on the key points, saving all four break points she faced while converting four of her five opportunities.

Fernandez tried to set the tone early, pushing Rybakina right at the start. The Canadian had a look at an early break, going up 15-40 the first time Rybakina served, but committed errors on both break points to let the world No. 1 off the hook.

That miss proved costly as Rybakina was ruthless once she got some momentum. From 1-2 down in the first, the world No. 1 reeled off five games in a row, converting both of her break point chances, to take the opening set.

In the second, the first opportunity went to Rybakina in the third game and the Canadian missed a backhand on the second break point to hand the edge to the top seed. With her back against the wall, Fernandez kept fighting and had two chances to get back on serve in the following game, but Rybakina held her ground, erasing both break points with winners to escape and consolidate.

That proved to be Fernandez's last chance to get back in the match. A hold in the following game to get to 2-3 was all the Lavalloise could muster the rest of the way as Rybakina finished the match on a three-game run, including a second break, to secure her fourth title of the year.

The runner-up result in Ningbo was Fernandez's second final during this year's Asian Swing, having also won the title in Singapore at the end of September. She now heads to Tokyo for the WTA 500 event, where she could meet Rybakina again in the quarter-finals.
