Athletes who are part of Tennis Canada’s full-time National Tennis Centre (NTC) in Montreal are used to spending time in the classroom as it’s part of their curriculum to becoming well-round people and tennis players.
Earlier this year, they swapped their school lessons for media training provided by National, a public relations firm based in Montreal. The session included theoretical and practical components in both traditional media and social media. The goal was to help the young athletes build their interview skills as well as their online brand to attract fans and potential sponsors.
“An athlete's career begins at a very young age. It's crucial to adopt good practices early on to cultivate a positive image with the media, fans, sponsors, and the organization”, said Gabrielle Proulx, Director of Media and Public Relations at National. “The long-term success of their career depends on it. Missteps in this area are costly and take time to forget. Today, everyone is filming you, and the internet remembers everything.”
The players very much appreciated the session and took a lot away from it including how to conduct themselves in front of a camera and the importance of creating a strong digital footprint by being active and authentic on social media.
