Titles were recently handed out at Canada’s biggest wheelchair event of the year, the WC100 Birmingham Wheelchair Tennis Classic at Sobeys Stadium in Toronto, ON. Shawn Courchesne made sure the host nation didn’t come out empty handed as the Bramptonian struck gold in quad singles.

Courchesne lived up to his billing in quad singles round-robin play. The top seed went perfect as he topped the group of five, which also featured three fellow Canadians.
The quad world No. 21 scored two double bagels in his opening three matches. The lone game Courchesne conceded over that span was against countryman Mitch McIntyre, but he was forced to retire after dropping the first set 6-1.
Group supremacy came down to the final match, with Courchesne taking on second seed Oliver Cox of Great Britain. The Canadian cruised in the decisive contest, beating the Brit 6-1, 6-2 to reach the winner’s circle. The title was Courchesne’s fourth of the year and second at a WC100 event, following his triumph in Houston earlier this season.
Canada nearly had a finalist in men’s doubles, but a few Canucks were one-win short of the title match. Thomas Venos, alongside eventual singles titlist Andrew Penney of Great Britain, lost out to Daisuke Arai and Kouhei Suzuki of Japan, while Patrick Levis and Brazilian teammate Gustavo Carneiro Silva were defeated by ultimate champions, Nicolas Charrier and Guilhem Laget of France.

Japan was well-represented on the women’s side as the nation doubled up. Manami Tanaka and Saki Takamuro won the doubles title, then the two battled for the singles crown, where Tanaka won in three sets.
