Team Canada missed out on a quarter-final berth at the Billie Jean King Cup and Davis Cup Junior Finals in Cairo, Egypt.

The girls’ team, captained by Sharon Fichman, split their opening two singles matches against Romania, with Isabella Ruyu Yan conceding just six games en route to her win. Unfortunately for the Canadians, they lost the tie in the decisive doubles match.

Canada battled in their next tie against four-time reigning champions the United States as two of the three matches went the distance, but the Canucks were ultimately swept.

Undeterred, the girls ended round-robin play on a high note thanks to a comeback win over Slovakia. With Canada down 0-1, Ruyu Yan dropped only one game to level the tie. She and Elisabeth Djabourian then sealed the victory with a straight-sets win in doubles.

Canada will play eighth seeds Colombia in the first round of the 9th to 16th place play-off.

The boys were unfortunately unable to get on the board in their group. The Canadians lost 3-0 to Australia in their opening tie, despite Thomas O’Neill rallying to force a decisive set in the first singles match. Canada was then bettered by hosts Egypt before falling to Serbia in the final tie of the round robin.

The Canucks, captained by Zack Ohlin, will meet two-time reigning champions the United States in round one of the 9th to 16th place play-off.
