There’s no stopping Bianca Andreescu right now. Fresh from claiming the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank title in Toronto, the 19-year-old looks on course for a deep run at the US Open. Her latest triumph: a second-round 6-3, 7-5 victory over Kirsten Flipkens on a packed Court 5 at Flushing Meadows. https://twitter.com/markhmasters/status/1167167141747023878 Andreescu’s determination was on show early against the WTA Tour’s 110th-ranked player. Facing three break points in just the second game, the teenager rallied and took the initiative from the Belgian on her way to clinching the first set 6-3. The set-winning point was a particularly-impressive backhand return winner which drew deserved applause from the crowd. https://twitter.com/TennisCanada/status/1167156214406549504 The second set didn’t start as the Canadian would have liked as she went down an early break. In typical, relentless fashion, though, Andreescu evened things up almost immediately before going on to take control once again. However, it wasn’t until she was 6-5 up that the youngster finally struck the killer blow. On Flipkens’ serve, Andreescu fought back from 30:0 down to claim a decisive break which would hand her the victory and a place in the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career. https://twitter.com/WTA_insider/status/1167167852555722760 The teenager will now face the winner of this evening’s match between 19th seed Caroline Wozniacki and Danielle Collins of the United States. The Canadian overcame Wozniacki on her way to the final of the Auckland Open in January but she has never before faced Collins. (Feature photo: Mauricio Paiz)
