Gabriel Diallo advanced to the round of 16 in Shanghai after third-round opponent David Goffin retired due to injury.
The match lasted 12 minutes and ended with the Canadian up 3-0 before the Belgian pulled out of the match. The 31st-ranked Diallo was strong on his serve in the abbreviated outing, winning half of his service points via his four aces.
It’s a disappointing end to the tournament for Goffin, who was riding high off a massive upset of sixth-ranked Ben Shelton in the second round.

The 24-year-old Diallo will take on Zizou Bergs in the round of 16 on Tuesday, following Bergs’ upset of 19th seed Francisco Cerundolo in the third round.
Diallo has won both career meetings between the two, most recently in the final at the Libema Open, giving the Montreal native his first career ATP title. The only other meeting between the two came this past April in Madrid, when Diallo beat Bergs in straight sets.
If he advances, Diallo lines up for a potential quarter-final matchup against Novak Djokovic.
Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov will play their third-round matches early Monday morning. Auger-Aliassime will face off with Jesper de Jong, while Shapovalov will battle Jiri Lehecka.
