The last Grand Slam event on the tennis calendar, the US Open, has begun and it is a big one for the Great White North. Not only is there a sizeable group of Canucks competing in New York, but it will be the biggest group of seeds from Canada in singles at a major ever.

Here’s what you need to know.

What to Watch: Five Canadian Seeds

For the first time, five Canadians will be seeded in singles at a Grand Slam event. As the final major of 2025 gets underway in New York, there will be two Canadian women and three men seeded at the US Open.

The historic event got underway with an all-Canadian clash on Sunday between No. 31 seed Leylah Annie Fernandez and Rebecca Marino, the lone Canadian to come through qualifying, won by Fernandez in straight sets. She will face either Elsa Jacquemot or Marie Bouzkova in round two.

Gabriel Diallo is seeded for the first time at a Grand Slam event in his career at No. 31. He kicks off his campaign on Monday as well against Damir Dzumhur.

Félix Auger-Aliassime (No. 25) and Denis Shapovalov (No. 27) round out the Canadian contingent. Both will be in action on Tuesday, with Auger-Aliassime taking on Billy Harris and Shapovalov facing off with last week’s Winston-Salem champion Marton Fucsovics.

Victoria Mboko made her US Open debut on Monday but was beaten by two-time Grand Slam singles champion Barbora Krejcikova. It was the Montreal Champion’s first time getting direct entry in the main draw at a Grand Slam event and she was the highest Canadian seed at No. 22.

The doubles draw has not yet been released.

In Case You Missed it: Fernandez’s Monterrey Streak Ends

A trio of Canadians were looking to get a few more matches in ahead of the US Open last week.

Of particular note was Leylah Annie Fernandez’s return to Monterrey, where she won back-to-back titles in 2021-2022. It was the Canadian’s first time in Northern Mexico since the second of her title wins.

She extended her winning streak to 11 matches with a first-round win over Jacqueline Cristian but suffered her first defeat at the event since 2020 when she was beaten in three sets by Rebecca Sramkova in round two.

Gabriela Dabrowski was competing in the doubles in Monterrey fresh off her title in Cincinnati. She and Erin Routliffe were the top seeds but lost in the quarter-finals to Linda Noskova and Sramkova.

Gabriel Diallo competed at the ATP 250 event in Winston-Salem. He had a bye and then a walkover to reach the third round without hitting a ball. In his first match of the event, he lost to Hamad Medjedovic in straight sets.

Under the Radar: Only Marino Gets Through Qualies

Seven Canadians were trying to increase the number of Canucks in the US Open main draw but only Rebecca Marino managed to get through.

Cadence Brace and Carol Zhao both picked up a win but were beaten in round two. Carson Branstine, Marina Stakusic, Liam Draxl, and Alexis Galarneau all lost in the first round.

On the ITF Tour, Alvin Nicholas Tudorica put up the best result by a Canadian, reaching the semifinals of the M15 event in Ma’anshan, China, where had to retire against the eventual champion Maxim Zhukov.

It is another busy week on home soil to wrap up August with the biggest ITF Junior event in Canada, the J300 Internationaux Junior Banque Nationale de Repentigny, taking place as well as the largest national championship, the Steve Stevens Masters Tennis Championships, getting underway in Vancouver.
