Overview

Team Canada wer looking to punch their ticket to the 2026 Billie Jean King Cup Finals and that road headed through Astana, Kazakhstan this week in the Qualifiers. The tie was played on clay at the Beeline Arena in the Kazakhstani capital.

It is the second year in a row that Canada played their qualifying tie on the road. The 2023 Billie Jean King Cup champions failed to qualify for the 2025 Finals as they were eliminated in this stage a year ago. At the time, it was a three-team round robin but the format changed for 2026, switching to a traditional home-away tie against one other nation.

The tie was best-of-five matches, with each match being best-of-three sets. The winning nation advanced to the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in September in Shenzhen, China.

The Teams

The Canadian lineup changed significantly over recent weeks since the team was originally announced on Mar. 12.

Bianca Andreescu made her return to Team Canada after a near-four-year absence. She was joined by three women relatively new to the squad. Kayla Cross and Ariana Arseneault were participating in the Qualifiers for the second year in a row, having earned their first nominations a year ago, while Sasha Vagramov was nominated to Team Canada for the first time. Marie-Ève Pelletier was once again interim captain while Heidi el-Tabakh is on maternity leave.

The hosts Kazakhstan were without world No. 2 Elena Rybakina and were led by veteran Yulia Putintseva and doubles star Anna Danilina. They were joined by Zhibek Kulambayeva, Aruzhan Sagandykova, and Sonja Zhiyenbayeva. Yuriy Schukin was the captain.

Canada and Kazakhstan had met once before in Billie Jean King Cup competition. That clash was nine years ago in Montreal in the World Group II, with Canada coming out on top 3-2. Andreescu and Putintseva both participated in that tie and played each other, with the Kazakhstani prevailing in three sets. However, Andreescu got the last laugh as she clinched the tie for Canada with a victory in the fourth singles match.

The Qualifiers looked quite a bit different from last year, when the qualifying round was composed of round robins with groups of three teams. Canada finished second in Group A, beating Romania but losing to Japan. The tie with Japan decided the group, with the doubles deciding the tie. The Japanese pair of Shuko Aoyama and Ena Shibahara beat Cross and Rebecca Marino in three sets to take the match, the tie, and the group.

As a result of the defeat in Tokyo, Canada missed out of the Billie Jean King Cup Finals for the first time since the introduction of the Finals format in 2020/2021.

In November, Team Canada made the trip to Monterrey, Mexico, for the Play-Offs, which was also a three-team round robin with the group winner advancing to the 2026 Qualifiers. This time, Canada dominated the group. Led by Victoria Mboko, Canada defeated Denmark 2-1 and Mexico 2-0 to win Group A and get back into this year’s Qualifiers.
