Gabriel Diallo is incredibly proud of his African and Eastern European roots. His father, Moubassirou, is from Guinea and his mother, Iryna, is from Ukraine.

For Black History Month, the Montreal native spoke about the athletes he looks up to and how he hopes to set the right example for kids who are hoping to someday follow in his footsteps.

During his formative years Diallo discovered role models in Gael Monfils, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and a certain no. 76 on his favourite hockey team.

“I was a Habs fan growing up during the prime years of P.K. Subban,” Diallo explained. “He was so charismatic at the rink, he was not scared to be himself and show his character. I find that amazing.”

Now a professional athlete himself, Diallo understands the responsibility that comes with being in the spotlight and a source of inspiration for those who follow his career. He’s more than happy to lead by example.

“I just try to be myself on the court, to express my emotions, to be very respectful, and to portray a good image,” Diallo explained. “I’m in a very fortunate position. I get to play on some of the biggest courts in the world so I’m well aware that kids are watching me. If you grow up and you don’t see anyone who looks like you, it’s not going to be an incentive to play the sport.”

Diallo is honoured to count Monfils, fellow Montrealer Félix Auger-Aliassime, Francis Tiafoe, and Ben Shelton among his current tennis peers and he’s excited to continue building a path for the next generation to follow in their footsteps.
