CHAMPIONS CROWNED AT 2024 CANADIAN UNIVERSITY TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS IN MONTREAL
The University of Alberta’s women’s team wins fifth consecutive title.
[MONTREAL, QC] August 12, 2024 – The 2024 Canadian University Tennis Championships came to an exciting end on Sunday, as the University of Alberta’s women’s club and the University of British Columbia’s men’s team emerged victorious. The tournament takes place annually and features the best tennis talent from schools across Canada. The finals were held at the IGA Stadium in Montreal, Quebec, and for the first time, as part of U SPORTS programming.
On the women’s side, Alberta’s Pandas continued to prove that they’re the team to beat, as they cruised past the University of Dalhousie in the semi-finals 7-0 before taking down the Université de Laval 4-1 in the finals. The Pandas kicked off their day on Sunday with a great effort in doubles, earning the first point of the finals. Then, wins in singles by Alexandra Jewitt, Sonia Skobkareva, and Marena Diaz Nakagawa were enough to take down the Rouge et Or. The University of Alberta has now won five University Championships in a row.
It wasn’t over for the Université de Laval, who had a chance to win the national title in the men’s division. They reached the final with a 7-0 triumph over the Dalhousie Tigers and were looking to build on this momentum against the University of British Columbia. But the 2022 champions, UBC’s Thunderbirds, proved too strong in the title showdown, defeating the Rouge et Or by a score of 4-2. Marvin Kao of UBC led the way for his team with wins in doubles and singles.
In the third-place playoffs, the University of Toronto took out Dalhousie University in both the women’s and men’s divisions.
