Duncan Chan had an impressive run at the ITF M25 Montreal event at IGA Stadium, but the tournament’s eventual champions stood in his way of securing any silverware on home soil.

In singles, the Canadian opened with a first-round win over Trois-Rivières runner-up Theodore Dean, setting up a clash against top-seed Clement Chidekh of France. After narrowly dropping the opening set, Chan responded in dominant fashion to stun Chidekh 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-4 and move on to the quarter-finals.

The Markhamite was one of two Canadians among the last eight, along with No. 4 seed Juan Carlos Aguilar, but that marked the end of the host nation’s hopes of a singles title. Aguilar was ousted by qualifier Oskar Brostrom Poulsen, while Chan lost to seventh seed Maks Kasnikowski of Poland.

No one was stopping Kasnikowski’s run in Montreal as the Pole cruised to the title without dropping a set, defeating Moroccan Taha Baadi 7-6(3), 6-1 in the final.

Chan’s best chance to hoist a trophy on home soil came in doubles. The Canadian, alongside American Daniel Milavsky, upset No. 2 seeds Aguilar and Baadi in the opening round en route to reaching the final.

The duo battled top seeds Ben Jones of Great Britain and David Poljak of Czechia, who defeated two all-Canadian teams on their path to the championship match. The British-Czech side took the opener in a tight tiebreak, but Chan and Milavsky managed to force a decisive match tiebreak.

Jones and Poljak came out of the decider on top, securing their second title as a team with a 7-6(6), 4-6, 10-6 win in the final. Chan was looking for his third-career ITF title.
