Although no Canadians remain in singles at the 2021 French Open, things are looking bright on the doubles side of the tournament.

Gabriela Dabrowski and Leylah Fernandez, the all-Canadian duo, won their first round match 6-2, 6-1 against No. 83 Georgina García Pérez from Spain and No. 96 Julia Wachaczyk from Germany.

Dabrowski, from Ottawa, Ontario, and Fernandez from Laval, Quebec, were looking for a bounce back performance following an opening round loss at the Serbia Open just over two weeks ago.

They did just that.

Other than the first game where the duo was forced to save three break point opportunities, the Canadians were in complete control. Dabrowski and Fernandez converted on their two break point opportunities to take the first set 6-2.

The second set was just as dominant from the Canucks. They broke their opponents twice and never lost their service games.

It was a tremendous effort from Dabrowski and Fernandez. They converted 100 percent of their break point opportunities (4/4), won 70 percent of points on first serves, and won an astounding 73 percent of points on second serves.

Dabrowski and Fernandez will face Saisais Zheng from China and Ellen Perez from Australia in the second round. The Chinese and Australian pair are coming off a big win against Americans Coco Gauff and Venus Williams.
