New faces are going to be in the spotlight over the next two days for Team Canada in Astana, Kazakhstan. Kayla Cross is slated to make her singles debut at the Billie Jean King Cup in the opening match of the 2026 Qualifiers tie on Friday against Yulia Putintseva, while Ariana Arseneault and Sasha Vagramov will play their first matches for Team Canada on Saturday in the doubles.
Cross’ first singles match at the Billie Jean King Cup will be a big one, as the 21-year-old will lead off for Team Canada this week against Kazakhstan. She will take on the host’s top singles player this week, Putintseva.
The draw for the tie was made on Thursday in Astana. After Cross and Putintseva kick off the action at 2:00 pm local, 5:00 am eastern in Canada, Bianca Andreescu will contest her first Billie Jean King Cup match since 2022 against Kazakhstani No. 2 Sonja Zhiyenbayeva.
On Saturday, Arseneault and Vagramov are expected to make their Billie Jean King Cup debuts, earning the nomination in doubles. Arseneault was part of Team Canada in the 2025 Qualifiers in Tokyo but did not play, while Vagramov was nominated for the first time this week. They will take on the Kazakhstani pair of doubles world No. 7 Anna Danilina and Zhibek Kulambayeva.
Andreescu will meet Putintseva in the first potential close-out match on Saturday after the doubles. If the tie is even at 2-2 after that match, Cross is scheduled to meet Zhiyenbayeva for all the marbles.
“All the players are fit and ready to go – we’re excited for the competition to begin,” said Team Canada’s interim captain Marie-Ève Pelletier during their press conference after the draw. “We’re very happy to have Kayla Cross kick things off in her first singles match at the Billie Jean King Cup, followed by our most experienced player, Bianca Andreescu. Saturday will be a big day with three matches, so we’ll be prepared and focused on recovering quickly. Our goal is to win and qualify for the Finals, and we can’t wait to get started.”

Cross has a 1-1 record in Billie Jean King Cup play, contesting both doubles matches at the 2025 Qualifiers alongside Rebecca Marino. While most of Cross’ best professional results have come in doubles, she does have two ITF singles titles to her name and is ranked just inside the Top 200.
The opening matchup against Putintseva will be a challenge for the London, ON, native. Putintseva will be just the seventh Top 100 opponent that Cross has faced in her career. She is 0-6 in her previous six meetings with highly-ranked opponents. However, if the tie comes down to the fifth rubber, the Canadian would be the favourite as she is ranked more than 800 spots above Zhiyenbayeva.
When Andreescu takes to the court to face off with Zhiyenbayeva on Friday, it will be her first time donning the red and white since the 2022 Billie Jean King Cup Finals. While she has a very strong record in the team competition, 8-4 in singles and 11-4 overall, her last appearance for Team Canada was a tough three-set loss to Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland.

“I know they’re fierce competitors, and I know Yulia [Putintseva] very well so I’m not expecting anything to come easy,” said Andreescu. “But our team is ready, and representing Canada is such an honour. We’re all really excited to go out there and compete for our country.”
The only singles matchup at this tie that has happened before will be the first singles match on Saturday when Andreescu takes on Putintseva. The pair have met twice before, with Putintseva emerging victorious both times. One of those meetings came in Billie Jean King Cup competition back in 2017, with the Kazakhstani winning in three sets. Putintseva also won their most-recent meeting back in 2023 in Abu Dhabi in straight sets. This will be their first clash on clay.

Canada’s all-rookie doubles team will have their hands full in the opening match on Saturday. At No. 7 in the WTA doubles rankings, Danilina is the highest-ranked player in the tie for either team and the Kazakhstani pair will be the heavy favourites.
However, Arseneault and Vagramov are both strong doubles players and have had good starts to the season. Between them, they have 15 career ITF doubles titles, including three in 2026. Even though they have never won a title together on the pro circuit, they have shared the court in several big doubles matches recently. Arseneault beat Vagramov in an ITF W50 doubles final last November in Chihuahua, Mexico, while Vagramov tagged her back just last month in the W15 Trois-Rivières final.

While she has not faced Danilina in a final, Arseneault did beat Kulambayeva to win the W35 doubles title in Punta Canada back in September 2024. On that occasion, Arseneault was partnering Cross.
The first nation to win three matches in the tie will advance to the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Shenzhen, China, in September. The loser will play in the Play-offs in November.
