Tennis Canada announced on Wednesday the list of players who will take part in the 2022 Saguenay National Bank Challenger when the event makes its much-anticipated return later this month.
Sanctioned by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), the tournament – which is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year – offers $60,000 USD in prize money and will be held for the first time since 2019 with action set to commence from October 17 to 23 at the Club de Tennis Intérieur Saguenay.
Fans will be looking forward to following the fortunes of Canadian Katherine Sebov, who won the Saguenay National Bank Challenger in 2018, in the main draw, while fellow up-and-coming Canucks Cadence Brace, Marina Stakusic, Stacey Fung, Kayla Cross and Ana Grubor are currently scheduled to take part in qualifying. Wild Cards will be confirmed before the start of the event.
Moyuka Uchijima (No. 124) of Japan is the tournament’s No. 1 seed and will face stiff competition from the likes of the United States’ Robin Anderson (No. 164), Louisa Chirico (No. 195) and the Netherlands’ Arianne Hartono (No. 147) from the WTA Tour’s Top 200.
“We are very happy to return to Saguenay after two years,” said Francis Milloy, Tournament Director of the Saguenay National Bank Challenger. We have always been treated to some very good tennis here and I’m sure that the 15th edition will be one of the most exciting. This tournament represents an excellent springboard for our young Canadian players who are trying to find their place on the international scene and progress in the world rankings.”
