It was a magical weekend at the All England Club. Hard work, dedication, perseverance, and two weeks of jaw-dropping tennis culminated in well-deserved hardware for the Champions.
In the Gentlemen’s Singles, Novak Djokovic emerged victorious over Nick Kyrgios 4-6 6-3 6-4 7-6(3). It had been a year since Djokovic held a grand slam trophy and this one clearly meant a lot to Novak after the year he’s had.
In his post-match interview, he reiterated that Wimbledon is now, and will always be the most special tournament in his career. Along with achieving his childhood dream for the seventh time, he acknowledged that his relationship with his opponent was officially a bromance.
It’s yet to be confirmed whether the two did in fact go to dinner. It may need to wait a few days as Djokovic has been rather busy enjoying the celebrations with his family who got the rare opportunity to spend time on an empty Centre Court.
He or a member of his team has also been occupied going through the congratulatory posts on social media from fellow athletes and some Canadian tennis players.
Despite all the praise he was getting, Novak took some time to congratulate the Ladies’ champion Elena Rybakina
Rybakina defeated Ons Jabeur 2-6 6-3 6-3 and the first-time major champion did not display the same emotion on court as the seven-time champion.
Some critics noted that she appeared rather stoic. In case people may have missed it, the emotion did hit her when asked about her parents in her post-match press conference.
A lovely moment from the 23-year-old. She later took to Instagram and summed up her feelings with a short and sweet message.
Not every champion falls to the grass and kisses the court. Every player has their own unique personality. In stark contrast to Rybakina, the Gentlemen’s doubles champions showed intense emotion.
The synchronized fall to the grass from Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell will go down as one of the greatest on-court celebrations in Wimbledon history. The doubles event may not get the same attention as the singles, but it is just as enthralling.
That leaves the Ladies’ doubles Champions Katerina Siniakova and Barbora Krejcikova who won their fifth major title as a team.
Huge smiles and hugs for one of the most successful doubles teams in recent history. They aren’t just a team on the court, but they are great friends as well.
It’s great to see that successful singles players are so committed to playing doubles with each other. In particular Krejcikova whose been ranked as high as number two in singles.
There you have it, the speechless Rybakina, the unbelievable Ebden and Purcell, the sister like Siniakova and Krejcikova, and the grateful father Djokovic.
Four unique celebrations that were wonderful in their own way and a great way to cap off the Championships.
