Andreescu hits a backhand

Former U.S. Open champion Bianca Andreescu made a winning start to her 2022 campaign in Flushing Meadows, New York on Monday thanks to a 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Harmony Tan of France, the woman who defeated Serena Williams at Wimbledon earlier this summer.

The 22-year-old Canadian needed just 25 minutes to take the opening set 6-0 on the strength of just one unforced error. Tan steadied herself to win the second set, but a well-timed bathroom break before the start of the third frame allowed Andreescu to reset and regain her composure to finish the match on a high note. She improves her career U.S. Open record to 11-1 after winning the title in 2019 and reaching the Round of 16 last year.

In Wednesday’s second round, she’ll face an in-form Beatriz Haddad Maia, seeded no. 15 in the tournament. The Brazilian has won two WTA singles titles this season and reached the final of the National Bank Open presented by Rogers in Toronto a few weeks ago.

Félix Auger-Aliassime, Rebecca Marino, and Leylah Fernandez are still to come on day one of the U.S. Open. You can watch all the action on TSN and RDS.
